Red

[edit]

Someone MUST add the "red" meaning of this word! —This unsigned comment was added by 88.155.15.13 (talkcontribs) 2006-07-04 11:58:50.

Hebrew etymology

[edit]

Split by etymology: soil-Adam on one hand and red on the other, right? --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:54, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

אדם (adám)(earth) and אָדוֹן (adón)(lord) probably related. --Darkmagine (talk) 01:17, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Additional definitions?

[edit]

Can this also mean "soil" or "light brown"? 173.89.236.187 00:48, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

This root can, but not this actual word. See אֲדָמָה (land, earth, soil) and אדום / אָדֹם (red, reddish brown). --WikiTiki89 14:58, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Red

[edit]

Seriously? No connection to ʔadōm (red) pointed out?

root ʔDM (red): ʔadōm (the color red), ʔədām (blood, because it is red, later reduced to dām in Hebrew by phonetic weakening; see Aramaic ʔəḏem and Akkadian adāmmu, "blood"), ʔadāmāh (clay, red earth), ʔādām (man, earthling, made from clay according to tradition).
