Etymology of վերք

Doesn't an etymology relating to PIE *wer seem convincing? A potential relation between *wer and վեր can be explained on semantic grounds since *wer signifies 'to burn' while վեր can refer to a semantic field related to 'scars, injuries, etc.' As well as, a phonetic relation can be detected, and if this is true this leads to two potential paths of development. The first one being the assumption that վեր is inherited, with the phonetic explanation being that *w renders Armenian v as an exception to the regular *w>g change and *e>e *r>r. While the second one would be a borrowing from an Iranian source thus explaining *w>v. However, Matasović 2009 cites PIE *w> Arm.v as a valid special development, therefore increasing the potentiality that վեր is inherited. This assumption has been made, to an extent, by Ačaṙean who compares վեր to Sanskrit व्रण (vraṇa, “wound”), a descendant of *wer, and this comparison is helpful because it further justifies the claim that *wer and վեր are semantically connected, and if the phonetic connection is justified as well then descent from *wer could be potentially claimed BoghosBoghossian (talk) 09:55, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
