Western Armenian pronunciation
[edit]@Revolution Saga, Hovsepig, about [səpʰ-] vs [əspʰ-]: Sakapetoyan has [սըփըռվիլ] for սփռուիլ. See also the discussion in HAB. How do you pronounce this actually? Vahag (talk) 14:44, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Vahagn Petrosyan: I've only heard of [səpʰ.ɾel], with passive [səpʰ.ɾə.vil]
- side note: when the ս is before two consonants, you check if the second consonant is տ or not: ըստրուկ vs սըփռել սըրբել սըխտոր. Does Saga's community apparently use /əspʰɾel/, that's cool :)
- Another side note: in EA, a /Cɾ-v/ passive is pronounced as usually /Cəɾ-vel/, while it's usually /Cɾə-vil/ in WA -- Sakabadeyon tends to use EA-like pronunciations in his dictionary. Hovsepig (talk) 19:31, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, I was unaware it was a subject of dispute and assumed that the word follows the standard WA rule on word initial սփ clusters like in սփիւռք։--Revolution Saga (talk) 20:49, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, there is no dispute on how the word is actually pronounced. It is [səpʰ.rel]. Some authors say this ought to be changed based on the etymology, if ս- (s-) is indeed the intensifying particle. See for example here, on page 156, second column. I will change the pronunciation back. Vahag (talk) 20:57, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
