@Hovsepig: I had made a change to the pronunciation module, because Ačaṙean distinguishes ռ and ր in Constantinople dialect. Compare սառա, սառայ, սառմա but սարը, սարըլըխ. User:Սէրուժ was saying that Western Armenian children are taught in school to pronounce ռ and ր differently. Are ռ and ր completely merged into ր in your experience? @Pompyxmori, AntiPakhlava. @Vahagn Petrosyan: so the Bolis dialect that Adjarian spoke is extinct. The city switched to speaking Standard Western. A phonetician there told me they don’t have a phonemic trill. In Lebanon and Syria, there is also no phonemic trill. Children are told that ր ռ are just homophonous letters — I don’t even know how to make a trill. Some older grammars of WA (19th century) say there is a trill but this is extinct for most modern speakers. There are reports that schools in Canada try to be conservative and teach kids a trill but it’s pretty artificial. Most modern linguistic grammars state that modern WA just doesn’t have a trill (Vaux 1998 phonology book), while teaching grammars vary depending on how artificial/conservative they are Hovsepig (talk) 16:06, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

@Vahagn Petrosyan: The Bolis dialect still exists, which I'm a native speaker of. As for the question at hand, teachers sometimes prescriptively differentiate between ռ and ր, to orient students to use proper orthography (for example, my Armenian school teacher during spelling tests). Though, in conversation, I have never heard anyone as of 20 years differentiate between the two. Pompyxmori (talk) 12:19, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
