Is this word cognate to the German probieren and Dutch proberen? When I heard this word I thought it was. Mallerd 16:36, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is. The base verb is пробовать (probovatʹ), where the -в- = imperfective aspect, and -ать = infinitive ending. So the stem is проб-. —Stephen 17:17, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Would you happen to know the etymology of it? Mallerd 14:22, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Russian пробовать (probovatʹ) comes from the noun проба (proba) < Polish proba or German Probe < Middle Latin proba < Latin verb probo < Proto-Indo-European *pro-bhwo- (being in front) < *pro-, a variant of the base *per-, + the PIE base *bhu- (to be). —Stephen 14:54, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
