Abkhaz lemmas

@Hippietrail, @Vahagn_Petrosyan Do Abkhaz nouns need the initial "а-"? AFAIK, it's definiteness prefix, like English "the". Russian-Abkhaz dictionary lists lemmas without "а-". Translations need to be fixed with абанан (abanan), IMO. Perhaps we need to decide, which forms to use as lemmas, like with Albanian, Bulgarian and Macedonian. From what I've read it's part of the lemma / dictionary form / citation form, much like final -i is part of the noun lemma / dictionary form / citation form in Georgian. Of course some dictionaries for several languages choose to use roots, stems, or some other form for convenience of indexing or lookup of their compilers or primary users, who may not be native speakers of the language.

Can you tell us more about "Russian-Abkhaz dictionary"? Is there only one ever published? How old is it? Is it intended more for Russian speakers than Abkhaz speakers? I've never been able to find an Abkhaz dictionary when I've been in Georgia. (I've never been to Abkhazia or Russia.) — hippietrail (talk) 04:37, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

I don't know what final -i is, I'm not familiar with the Abkhaz grammar. The Abkhaz-Russian (not Russian-Abkhaz, sorry) dictionary is here: [1] (Словарь проф. В. А. Касландзия - dictionary of provessor V. A. Kaslandziya). All words are in all caps for some reason. "Banana" entry: [2]. Oh sorry in my editing I managed to erase the essential information that I was comparing to Georgian! Georgian nouns end in -i (-ი) in their citation form. I'd say the editors of that dictionary did it to avoid every single noun being sorted under "a", but being electronic we don't have to worry about that so much. — hippietrail (talk) 05:30, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

I know only about these Abkhaz print dictionaries:

• Х. С. Бгажба (гл. ред.), Русско-абхазский словарь, 1964, Сухуми
• В. А. Касландзия, Абхазско-русский словарь, 2005, Сухум
• А. Н. Генко, Абхазско-русский словарь, 1998, Сухум

All of them include the initial "а-" in the citation form and we should follow them. The second dictionary, which seems to be the best, separates "а" from the rest of the word with a hyphen. I propose to do the same using head= as in аҷандар. --Vahag (talk) 12:30, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
