compounds etymon
[edit]Thank you @Chuck_Entz:. I am new, and appreciate help. I was looking Template:compound. I tried confix, got lots of red... Problem is, that compounds with πουλί = bird, will never end up in a category? -πουλ- / or: either -πούλι or -πουλο. I understand Ety will not take 3 components. sarri.greek (talk) 16:34, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- We don't make categories for words used in compounds- there would be too many. We only have categories for affixes- word parts, not whole words that can be used alone. Chuck Entz (talk) 16:42, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- OK, Thank you @Chuck_Entz:. I'll copy your ety. sarri.greek (talk) 17:00, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Sarri.greek: The current practise is to add a "Derived terms" sections to the words from which the compound is made: example. Also, I encourage you to use
{{affix}}
instead of{{prefix}}
or{{suffix}}
: it's more flexible, and it won't add "+" when you don't want them. example --Barytonesis (talk) 12:49, 11 December 2017 (UTC)- Yes, @Barytonesis: ΟΚ. At Derived terms, a...z, not grouped. (never knew why they call them terms). About compounds; Yes, affix.παράθημα fixes everything and thank you, Bary, for all these -θημα lemmata. But συνθετικά/word-components are not xxxfixes. i was trying for wordstem1+wordstem1+suffix. In eng it would be word+word+(suffix) no problems from inflected words. Sometimes stem1+in(ter)fix.ένθημα+stem2+suffix.επίθημα. (κανονι-ο-βολ-ώ = i bombard). Chuck Entz says that Categories for alllll components are too many, and of course, yes they are endless. I was trying for something like: {{compound|el|αγιο-|πουλ-|-ί|t1=holy|t2=bird|t3=suffix for neuter noun|tr3=-}} but I couldn't get it right at the time.
- Compound of αγιο- (agio-, “holy”) + πουλ- (poul-, “bird”) + -ί (“suffix for neuter noun”)
- Looks better now Uff, i'll just follow αγιο-+πουλί, end of story:) Thank you Μπάρυ, I'll go add some πουλιά derivatives now. sarri.greek (talk)
- @Sarri.greek: Yes, at first I was a bit bothered to use
{{affix}}
for things that are not affixes, and for which{{compound}}
is a better name, but I got used to it. - I see you have added descendants to πῶλος (pôlos), I will write you a message there about it. --Barytonesis (talk) 11:45, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
