Etymology

From Middle High German stumbel, from a substantivized variant of Old High German stumbal (mutilated, trimmed), ultimately from a nasal-extended formation of the root of either Stab (rod, staff)[1] or Stumpf (stump), the latter two which have been thought to be related.
