[edit]From Middle High German stumbel, from a substantivized variant of Old High German stumbal (“mutilated, trimmed”), ultimately from a nasal-extended formation of the root of either Stab (“rod, staff”)[1] or Stumpf (“stump”), the latter two which have been thought to be related.
