[edit]First attested as sommeldijch in 1324. Likely a compound of the hydronym Sonnemaer (potentially derived from a compound of a term cognate to zwin and Old Dutch meri (“lake”)) and Middle Dutch dijk (“levee”). Compare Son and Zonnemaire.
