- (Utrecht) Derived from sluis (“lock, sluice”). Named after a nearby sluice.
- (Hulst) Attested as De 3 Gezusters, Drie Gezusters in 1838-1857. Derived from sluis (“lock, sluice”). The alternative name Drie Gezusters ("Three Sisters") refers to the hamlet's location next to a levee called the Drie Gezustersdijk.
