Probably related to a group of chiefly German Low German [Term?] and Central German dialect verbs schnucken, schnuckeln, and variants. These verbs mean “to eat sweets”, “to suck (like a baby)”, occasionally “to kiss”, all of which senses suit the noun perfectly.
