[edit]Attested with certainty as scinne in 1208. Potentially derived from the hydronym Schin (related to Old Dutch skīnan (“shine, sparkle”)) or from dialectal schijn (“land cleared for agriculture”). Compare Schimmert, Schin op Geul and Schinveld.
