[edit]First attested as de schina in the mid-11th century. Of uncertain etymology. Perhaps derived from the hydronym *Skinion or from schijn (“land cleared for agriculture”) with op (“on”) and the hydronym Geul added to aid identification. Compare Schimmert, Schinnen and Schinveld.
