[edit]First attested as apud grangiam in hammis que vulgariter skilgaforwerch appellatur in 1323. Compound of Dutch Low Saxon schillig (“bent”) and ham (“alluvial land in the bend of a river”). The second element was initially voorwerk (“monastic grange”).
