From Middle High German schabe (scraper, chaff, moulding; moth, cockroach), from Old High German scaba (scraper, plane), from Proto-Germanic *skabō (scraper). Cognate with Dutch schaaf (plane). Also related to German Low German Schabbe (mange, scabies), English scab.
