[edit]- (Zuid-Holland) First attested as ruvene in the 12th century. Compound of Old Dutch ru (“rough, wild”) and vene (“peat bog, marsh”). Compare Roeven, Rokkeveen, Rouveen, Rucphen and Rukven.
