[edit]Attested as ROODE-SLUIS in 1847. Derived from rood (“red”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). Named after the colour of the building materials used to construct the lock. Compare Blauwe Sluis, Blauwesluis, Zwartsluis and Zwartsluisje.
