[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Possibly from a Middle High German variant of rueszling, perhaps ruoz (“soot”), from Old High German hruoz, from Proto-Germanic *hrōtaz (“soot”) + the suffix -ling. The semantic connection with soot would be referring to the grapes' tendency to develop black spots when ripe.[1]
There are several written references to the variety of grape dating from the 15th century.
