The reconstruction does not really require vocalization of laryngeals. Morphologically, this adjective is formed as *sph₁- +‎ *-rós with 0-grade root, as expected for Caland ro-adjectives. Such long consonant clusters were regularly resolved in Balto-Slavic by insertion of an epenthetic vowel (usually -ə-, but in some cases -o- as well) even when there was no laryngeal around. For illustration of this process, compare Slavic *mǫdrъ, Lithuanian mañdras /in o-grade/ and Germanic *mundraz /in 0-grade/. Even though these lemmas may not be genuine cognates, the effect of anaptyxis within Balto-Slavic is still evident. Bezimenen (talk) 13:22, 18 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
