I heard an explantion that it's *čelo (forehead) + *věkъ (age) = "the one with wisdom". Is that a folk (i.e. false) etymology? Kevlar67 (talk) 18:22, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Perhaps cognate with Persian کلوک (kalōk, “boy, young man”), Persian کلو (kulō, “The head man of a ward; the judge of a market; the governor of a province”), both are now obsolete.--Chernell (talk) 15:42, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Etymology
[edit]'The first part is from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (“crowd, people”), from *kʷel- (“to turn, roll > to travel, settle, cultivate; town”).'
I don't think that's thing. You can't just replace a plain velar with a labialised in the PIE forms, as they are held distinct and occur in different roots.--62.73.72.3 05:38, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
