Derivation
[edit]@Kwékwlos, Mellohi!, YukaSylvie, anyone else involved in Proto-Japonic:
Monolingual Japanese resources that list etymology derive 前 (mae, “front”) from Old Japanese 前 (*mape1), considered to be a compound of Old Japanese 目 (ma, “eye”, combining form for standalone me2) + 辺・方 (pe1, “area, roundabouts; in the direction of”, source of the modern directional particle へ (e)).
If the Ryukyuan branch corroborates the above, shall we add an ===Etymology===
section to the Proto entry here? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:13, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Unexplained move
[edit]@Chuterix, what is your basis for moving this entry from *mapya to *mapia? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 20:10, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- proper diphthong Chuterix (talk) 20:18, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- This term is widely regarded as a compound of 目 (ma-, "eye") + 方 (pe₁, "direction"), literally "eyewards".
- Proto-Japonic#Vowels shows Proto /e/ correlating to final /e₁/ in OJP. Why do you reconstruct a Proto diphthong for OJP /pe₁/?
- (More broadly, please leave informative edit comments -- too many of your edits have no edit comments at all.) ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 21:02, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
