Germanic 'steam'

Since Old High German has 'toum' without the s, is it possible that there was an s-mobile? (s)dʰuh₂mós? If that is the case then there were two Germanic forms, Template:termx < sdʰowh₂mós and Template:termx < dʰowh₂mós. The former gave English steam and Dutch stoom, and the latter gave Old Hihg German toum. —CodeCat 11:44, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

@CodeCat: Kroonen reconstructs *daumaz (“vapor”) (< *dʰowh₂-mo-) based on Faroese deymur (“strong smell”), Middle Dutch doom (“mist, haze”) and Old High German tuom (“vapor, haze, fume”) – however, shouldn't tuom go back to *dōma-? He doesn't explain this point.

As for *staumaz, he derives this from *stowbʰ-mo-, compare *steubaną. --Florian Blaschke (talk)
