Reconstruction

Considering the underlying meaning for these directional constructions seems to be "towards the (direction)", I assume they represent the neuter accusative case of the adjectives, similar to *wiþrą, serving originally as allative adverbs. The corresponding ablative constructions in *-anē would then have been formed secondarily to answer them, obviously after the roots were reinterpreted as *aust-raz and the like. Locatives

There probably also existed locative adverbs alongside the directive/allative adverbs; *auster (“in the east”), *nurþer, *sunþer and *wester alongside *austrą (“to the east”), *nurþrą, *sunþrą and *westrą. I'm not really sure if it's worth reconstructing however, as the allatives and locatives would have merged in all the daughter languages except for Gothic. Anglom (talk) 16:42, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
