It's not clear if the h-variant can be either reconstructed already for Proto-Finnic, nor if *h is original. Finnish ääliö might indicate that there was an original *l-variant, but that the Estonian h- is secondary. Compare also Finnish hälistä, häly ~ älistä. --Tropylium (talk) 12:21, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Votic
[edit]@Tropylium, Rua seeing as all Southern Finnic descendants have *-l- and all Northern Finnic descendants have *-n- is there any reason to assume the Votic -n- form isn't a borrowing from Ingrian or Finnish? Thadh (talk) 21:26, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- The fact that *n is original rather than a NF innovation. Odds seems low for both Votic forms being native, but I wouldn't rule out an Estonian loan either (in that case probably also into Livonian). --Tropylium (talk) 00:55, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
