Brythonic

[edit]

@Anglom, UtherPendrogn There is an Irish verb braith, from Old Irish braithid. Are the Brythonic descendants listed here not cognates of that verb instead of this one? —CodeCat 13:35, 24 September 2016 (UTC) Matasović (or the addended) version don't seem to think so. I'll look into it. UtherPendrogn (talk) 13:51, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

The Brythonic nouns are derived from PC *mratom, same as Old Irish mrath, a derivative of the past participle with probable pretonic shortening. Old Irish braithid and (Middle) Welsh bradaf presumably go back to a denominative *mratāti. Anglom (talk) 15:43, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
