Proto-Celtic

[edit]

@Anglom I'm a bit puzzled by the Celtic reconstruction. ē gives uɨ, so why not here? It appears as though this reflects a short *kley- instead. —CodeCat 23:08, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, it goes back to *kliyā. I just put it under *klēyos because Matasovic did. Anglom (talk) 23:17, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Where did you get *kliyā from then? Also, this is an adjective, so would it not be *kliyos? That wouldn't have the a-affection though. —CodeCat 00:00, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Apparently directional terms leveled the feminine form to the masculine due to their association with feminine "hand", *lọβ̃ < *ɸlāmā. Anglom (talk) 00:04, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Then the question is whether that levelling dates to Proto-Brythonic... —CodeCat 00:07, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I suspect this was actually a noun in PBr, being the substantivized feminine, which then got repurposed as an adjective in the later languages. —Mahāgaja · talk 06:36, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
