Provençal

[edit]
  • There’s no Provençal here. Is that Old Provençal ({{pro}})?
  • The Romanian term descends from Provençal??

  • I acquired that information from this.
  • Why did I insert that nonsense? I must have copied it to the incorrect location, but I am not sure where it goes now. I am going to ‘re‐organise’ this a little. --Æ&Œ (talk) 19:27, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hypothetical inherited reflexes of *Hispāniolus

[edit]

The name for Spanish, español, is not inherited. Instead, it is a Gallo-Romance borrowing. What would the hypothetical inherited forms look like (in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian)? My guess is accusative *Hispāniolum > *Ispaniolu > *Espaniolo > Españuelo (Spanish), Épagneul (French), Spagnolo (Italian), Espanholo (Portuguese), and Spanior (Romanian). And also the hypothetical English (via Norman French) reflex should be Espaniel or Spaniel! Kwékwlos (talk) 11:24, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Trypanaeus hispaniolus

[edit]

Does this count as an attestation? Kwékwlos (talk) 14:37, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

That's modern scientific Latin, presumably based on one Romance word or another. Nicodene (talk) 17:44, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
