Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-[1]. Cognate with Dacian *zalmo, Lithuanian želmuõ, želmeñs (plant, sprout), and Latvian zel̂me (vigorous, opulent growth)[2]. Compare with the Latvian hydronym Zelmin and the Lithuanian toponyms Želmenų káimas, Želmeniškių káimas, and Žalmiškių káimas.
