From Proto-Indo-European *bʰuǵ- (buck, he-goat). Cognate with English buck, Sanskrit बुक्क (bukka), Avestan 𐬠𐬏𐬰𐬀 (būza), Persian بز (boz), Old Armenian բուծ (buc), Proto-Celtic *bukkos.
