Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *arH-gl̥h₁os, a compound of *h₂r̥h₃w- (“open field”) + *gl̥h₁éys (“mouse, weasel”). The first part is also found in Ancient Greek ἄρουρα (ároura), Sanskrit उर्वरा (urvarā), Latvian ars (“open space”) and Albanian arë (“field”). The second part can be compared to Latin glīs, Ancient Greek γαλέη (galéē) and Sanskrit गिरि (giri).
