[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *à- (“nominalizing prefix”) + *kɔ (“to crow”), with a partial reduplication of the verb-root *kɔ occurring, ultimately Onomatopoeic. Found widespread throughout Niger-Congo languages of common onomatopeic origin, see Ayere akɔkɔ, Igbo ọ̀kụkụ̀ (“fowl”), Proto-Edoid *O-khɔkhɔ, Proto-Bantu *nkókó, Akan akokɔ, Ukaan ɛ̀kɔ̀kɔ̀.
See the onomatopeic origins of forms for cock in other un-related languages, see English cock, French coq, Hungarian kakas, Chinese 雞 where the consonant /k/ is heavily relied upon.
