Likely inherited from Proto-Edekiri *ɔ-bʊtʊ̃, perhaps equivalent to *ɔ-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ (woman, wife) +‎ *tʊ̃n (new), literally new woman; new wife. The ɪ/ʊ alternative forms likely stem from the alternative forms for woman, see *ɔ-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ and *ɔ-bʊ̃̀rɪ̃.
