[edit]Either a compound of *staur (“destruction, disturbance”) + *-jan,[1] or inherited from Proto-Germanic *staurijaną, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)towrH-éye-ti. Either way, ultimately from *(s)tewrH-, *(s)twerH- (“to stir up, agitate”).
