Reconstruction:Proto-West Germanic/snarkōn
Appearance
Proto-West Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain; possibly metathesized from Proto-Indo-European *srengʰ-, cognate with Lithuanian snarglýs (“snot”), Old Irish srennaid (“to snore”), Ancient Greek ῥέγκω (rhénkō, “to snore”), Sanskrit शृङ्खाणिका (śṛṅkhāṇikā, “snot”).
Alternatively, perhaps from earlier *snarrukōn, equivalent to *snarrōn (“to buzz, drone, snarl”) + *-ukōn.
