[edit]Matasović derives it from Proto-Celtic *sregnāti, from Proto-Indo-European *sregʰ- (“to snore”), but this should have given *srénaid.[1] According to Vendryes it's from a Proto-Indo-European root *srenk- + nasal suffix. Related to Ancient Greek ῥέγκω, ῥέγχω (rhénkō, rhénkhō, “to snore”).[2]
