[edit]From Proto-Germanic *hurnuta- ~ *hurnutô-, from Proto-Germanic *hurzô ~ *hurzniz (“hornet”) plus the animal suffix *-ut(a/ô)-, from an r/n-stem Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥h₂sḗr ~ *ḱr̥h₂snós (“hornet”), from *ḱerh₂- (“head, horn”). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *śirˀšō (“hornet”), Latin crābrō (“hornet”).
