[edit]From Proto-Germanic *hnōjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *knéh₂-ye-ti, from *kneh₂- (“to scrape, scratch”) + *-yeti. Cognate with Proto-Celtic *knāyeti (“to bite, chew”), Lithuanian knója (“to peel, tear”), Ancient Greek κνώ (knṓ, “to scrape, scratch”).
