[edit]From *gruʀn (“grief”) + *-ōn (whence Old English grorn, gnorn (“grief”)) or *gnuʀn (“sad”) + *-ōn (whence Old English gnorn (“sad”)), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrus-nó-s, from *gʰrews-.[1] Cognate with Proto-Slavic *grustь (“sadness”).
