Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Germanic *fadurwijô, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tr̥wyos (“paternal uncle”). Equivalent to *fader (“father”) + *-jō. Cognate with Latin patruus, Sanskrit पितृव्य (pitṛvya), and Classical Persian افدر (afdar, “paternal uncle”).
