Unknown; possibly from Proto-Germanic *brīwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréy-u-s ~ *bʰr̥y-éw-s, from *bʰr-ey-, from *bʰer- (“to boil”), cognate with Latin frīgō (“to roast”), Sanskrit भृज्जति (bhṛjjati, “to roast”).
