Unknown; possibly from Proto-Germanic *brīwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréy-u-s ~ *bʰr̥y-éw-s, from *bʰr-ey-, from *bʰer- (to boil), cognate with Latin frīgō (to roast), Sanskrit भृज्जति (bhṛjjati, to roast).[1]
