[edit]Inherited from Proto-Germanic *balwōną. Equivalent to *balu (“evil, misfortune”) + *-ōn or *balu (“evil, bad”) + *-ōn. Cognate with Old Norse bǫlva.
Compare also the class 1 weak verb in Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌻𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (balwjan).
