Perhaps from Proto-Germanic *þaisimô, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teh₂y- (to knead), compare Proto-Celtic *taistos (dough), Proto-Slavic *těsto (dough), Ancient Greek σταῖς (staîs) ~ σταιτός (staitós, dough).[1]
