Reconstruction:Proto-Turkic/tïŋla-
Appearance
Proto-Turkic
[edit]Alternative reconstructions
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *tiŋ (“reason, mind”) + *-la (“denominal suffix”). *tiŋ might be a loanword from Middle Chinese 聽 (theng, “to listen”) yet its back vowel & variant initial *d- make such a derivation difficult (Clauson, 1972:522).
Also compared to Proto-Tungusic *ǯiŋ-, Proto-Mongolic *ciŋla- (“to listen”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Usage notes
[edit]Oghuz descendants have the front vowel variant.
