Proto-Turkic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Clauson suggests a diminutive formation *kirpi (“hedgehog”) + *-k.
Nishanyan and ESTJa instead suggest a derivation *kïrp- (“to shave; to wink”) + *-k, however this should've yielded the earliest form *kïrpuk.
