Etymology

[edit]

From *čalpa- (to muddle) +‎ *-mur (cf. *čalpaŋ (mud), *čalpak (filth)). Became *čamur due to the simplification of the consonant cluster *-lpm-.

Doerfer instead suggests a derivation from *čam-, an unattested earlier version of *čom- (to sink).[1]
