Etymology

A derivative of *ān- (to breathe), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (to breathe), probably with an abstract noun suffix *-elme. Also possibly from *h₂en-h₂enh₁mo- (one whose breath is upon them), a form of the above root.
