Unclear. Compare Ancient Greek κεράϊν (keráïn, “wild radish”) or Chuvash хӗрен (hĕren) (if not from East Slavic).
For the name compare:
- Radish: German Meerrettich (literally “foreign radish”), English horseradish.
- Root: French raifort (literally “strong root”), Portuguese raiz-forte (literally “strong root”).
