Etymology

Probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ksalīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *ksol-éyeti. Represent a continuation of Proto-Indo-European *ksol-, from *kes- (to scrape, comb).

Cognate with Sanskrit क्षालयति (kṣālayati, to wash, cleanse), Lithuanian skaláuti (to wash, rinse).
