Etymology

Derived from the present stem of an earlier *verzti. Probably continuing Proto-Indo-European *wr̥ǵʰyéti (to tighten), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵʰ-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *wurgijaną (to strangle) and akin to Lithuanian ver̃žti (to string).
