Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/těmę
Appearance
Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]According to R. Matasović,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teg- (“to cover”) + *-mn̥, with eventual loss of pre-Slavic *g before *m. Vasmer and Snoj allude a possible relation to Proto-Slavic *tęti (“to chop”) from Proto-Indo-European *temh₂-, however, such a derivation is semantically dubious and does not explain the long *-ě-. Sometimes also compared to Ancient Greek σῶμα (sôma, “body”) of uncertain origin (probably from Proto-Indo-European *tweH- (“to swell”), akin to Proto-Slavic *tylъ (“back of the neck”)).
